How many days will a trip along the Golden Ring in a rented car take
The classic Golden Ring route from the capital is 6–8 cities that are convenient to visit sequentially rather than returning to Moscow after each one. Distances between neighboring cities are short: from Sergiev Posad to Pereslavl-Zalessky is about 70 km, from Pereslavl to Rostov Veliky roughly the same. The roads are paved, and the M-8 and M-7 motorways are in good condition, so even a sedan will make the trip comfortable.
How long does it take to travel between key cities
- Moscow — Sergiev Posad: 1–1.5 hours along the Yaroslavl highway, about 75 km — the first city on the route, convenient to leave early in the morning.
- Sergiev Posad — Pereslavl-Zalessky: 1–1.5 hours, the road goes through forests and fields, gas stations every 30–40 km.
- Pereslavl-Zalessky — Rostov Veliky: About 1 hour, the final stretch before Yaroslavl.
- Yaroslavl — Suzdal: 2.5–3 hours via Ivanovo or along the M-8 with a stop in Kostroma — here you should plan an extra day.
- Suzdal - Vladimir: 30–40 minutes, the shortest transfer of the route; after Vladimir it is convenient to return to the capital via the M-7 in 2.5–3 hours.
A full loop without stops in cities takes about 12–14 hours of pure driving. But the point of the trip is not to beat a speed record, but to see monasteries and kremlins. In the season from May to October, traffic jams accumulate on the way out of the capital on Friday evening—on the Yaroslavl highway, a traffic jam can add an hour to the trip. It is better to leave on Saturday morning or on a weekday.
How to choose a rental car for a trip along the Golden Ring
The Golden Ring route is 600–900 km of asphalt between Sergiyev Posad, Yaroslavl, Suzdal, and Vladimir, so the car class is chosen not for off-road conditions but for the number of passengers and luggage. Crossover: for family and off-season trips
For a family with a child or four adults, a crossover is more convenient: higher seating, a roomier trunk, and all-wheel drive will come in handy on wet or snowy roads. In both cases, the trunk fits suitcases for the whole group, and passengers in the second and third rows do not get tired during the 3–4 hour drive to Yaroslavl. What is important to know about traveling outside Moscow

A Russian driver only needs a passport and a category B driving licence. No certificates, military ID, or registration are required — this is the complete list that we check when handing over the keys. A driver with any experience is allowed to drive, but for cars of the 'Comfort' class and above, the age and experience requirements are stricter — the exact requirements are specified in the contract. If two people will drive along the Golden Ring route, the second driver is simply added to the contract — for this, their passport and licence will be needed.
Documents for a foreign driver
- Passport and migration card: Mandatory for all guests from CIS countries and far abroad when picking up a car in the capital.

Toll roads and parking on the Golden Ring route when renting a car
The Golden Ring route from the capital runs on the toll M-11 Neva and M-12 Vostok motorways, as well as the MSD (Moscow High-Speed Diameter) and TsKAD ring, so the road budget should be planned in advance. Fines from cameras come to the car owner, i.e., the rental company, and are re-invoiced to the renter — this is specified in the rental agreement.
Parking in the cities of the Golden Ring
In Sergiyev Posad, Yaroslavl, Suzdal, and Vladimir, parking near major attractions is mostly free, but paid zones exist in the centers of tourist cities. In the capital, the situation is different: within the Garden Ring, parking costs 380–800 ₽ per hour from 8:00 to 21:00, at night — 200 ₽, and the fine for non-payment reaches 5 000 ₽, while towing will cost 8 500–12 450 ₽ plus storage.
Before leaving, check which hotels on your route offer free guest parking — in Suzdal and Pereslavl-Zalessky this is standard practice. In the capital, we advise leaving the car at a park-and-ride lot near the MKAD ring road and then using taxi or metro if your destination is the city center.
Winter trip along the Golden Ring — tyres and all-wheel drive in rental
In winter, on the Golden Ring route, a car must be chosen based on two parameters: mandatory seasonal tires and type of drive. From December to February, by law (TR CU 018/2011), all vehicles must be on winter tires - the entire Rent-Trip fleet is switched in advance, so you get a car ready for snow and ice on M-8 and M-7 highways.
