Car rental for guests of the capital: conditions and documents
Have you ever thought about how convenient it is to explore Moscow and its surroundings without being tied to a schedule? For foreign guests, renting a car in the capital is freedom of movement, and in our Rent-Trip fleet there are 90 cars in 8 classes, from budget sedans for 3 300 ₽ per day to spacious SUVs and minivans.
What documents does a foreigner need to rent a car in Moscow
To rent a car, a foreigner will need a foreign passport with a visa or residence permit, a migration card, and a national driving licence. At Rent-Trip, we check the document package when delivering the car — this takes a few minutes, after which we sign the contract and hand over the keys. The paper package differs for guests from different countries, so we will break it down point by point.
- International passport: primary identity document; visa or residence permit must be valid for the entire rental period.
- Migration card: Issued upon entering Russia; if the stay period was extended, supporting marks are needed.
- National driving licence: we accept licences from countries party to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic — most European states.
- Notarized translation or IDP: for licences from countries outside the Vienna Convention, a certified translation into Russian or an International Driving Permit is mandatory — this is a requirement of Article 25 of Federal Law No. 196-FZ.
- Bank card of the main driver: used for the insurance hold; the amount and terms are specified in the contract.
A Chinese driving licence is valid in Russia only with a notarized translation—without it, the rental employee is not entitled to hand over the car. The same applies to licences issued in the USA, Japan, and some other states that have not joined the convention. An International Driving Permit (IDP) obtained in your home country solves the issue without translation, but its presence should be clarified when booking. For citizens of certain states, a simplified procedure applies: national licences are recognized without additional formalities if provided for by an international agreement—specific conditions are specified in the rental agreement. Age restrictions and driving experience requirements depend on the car class—specific numbers are indicated in the agreement and are voiced when confirming the order. Before submitting a request to Rent-Trip, send photos of documents in MAX—we will check them and advise if anything is missing.
Car rental terms for foreigners in Moscow and prices
The cost of rental for a foreigner consists of the car class and duration — from 3 300 ₽ per day for a sedan to 19 000 ₽ for a premium SUV. The longer the term, the lower the price per day: a week is counted as six days, a month as 21.
Rent-Trip rates for car rental in Moscow
| Class | Model examples | Price per day | Week (days × 6) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Geely Emgrand, Moskvich 6, Kia Cerato | 3 300–3 800 ₽ | 19 800–22 800 ₽ |
| Crossovers | Haval Jolion, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max, Omoda C5 | 4 200–6 500 ₽ | 25 200–39 000 ₽ |
| SUVs | Tank 300, Toyota Land Cruiser 300, UAZ Patriot | 3 500–19 000 ₽ | 21 000–114 000 ₽ |
| Minivans | Hyundai Staria, Kia Carnival | 9 500–10 500 ₽ | 57 000–63 000 ₽ |
Rent-Trip's fleet has 51 cars in eight classes, from compact sedans to nine-seat minivans. For a trip around the capital for two, a Geely Emgrand at 3 300 ₽ per day is enough; for a family with children, a Haval Jolion crossover at 4 200 ₽ is more practical; for a group of eight, a Kia Carnival at 10 500 ₽. All cars have automatic transmission except the Lada Niva Travel and UAZ Patriot with manual. Drive is front or all-wheel; fuel is mostly petrol, while minivans are diesel.
When booking, specify the period: daily, weekly, or monthly. The weekly rate at Rent-Trip equals six daily rates, the monthly rate is 21 daily rates, so long-term rental is significantly more profitable. The driver's age and experience affect the available car class—specific requirements are stated in the contract. For the insurance deposit, a bank card in the main driver's name is required; the deposit amount is also fixed in the contract. OSAGO (compulsory third-party insurance) covers each vehicle by law; CASCO (comprehensive insurance) terms are specified in the contract—before signing, the Rent-Trip manager will explain all points in Russian or English.
Delivery of the car to airports, railway stations and hotels when renting
Rent-Trip has no physical office, so we deliver the car to wherever is convenient for the client: to airports, railway stations, or to a hotel in any district of the capital. This saves an hour or an hour and a half on the first day of the trip — you don't need to go anywhere; the car meets you with a sign at the terminal exit or in the hotel parking lot.
Delivery to Moscow's four airports
The delivery service covers all four air harbors of the capital, each with its own logistics. To Sheremetyevo (SVO) — about 30 km from the MKAD ring road via the M-11 Neva motorway or Leningradskoye Shosse, that's the northern direction. Domodedovo (DME) — about 45 km south via Kashirskoye Shosse or the M-4. Vnukovo (VKO) — 28 km southwest via Kiyevskoye or Borovskoye Shosse. Zhukovsky (ZIA) — 40 km southeast via Novoryazanskoye Shosse.
We meet the client at the arrivals terminal and hand over the keys and documents right at the car in the multi-level parking lot. When booking, you provide the flight number—we track delays and reschedule the delivery time without extra calls.
Railway stations, hotels, and addresses in the city
Ten railway stations — Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, Kazansky, Kursky, Kievsky, Belorussky, Paveletsky and others — are also in the delivery area. If you arrived in the capital on the Sapsan or Lastochka, the car will be waiting by the square or at the nearest parking lot — up to half an hour before paperwork.
To hotels, apartments, and private addresses in the center — Khamovniki, Arbat, Tverskoy, Patriarch's Ponds, Chistye Prudy — and in residential areas like Sokola, Kuntsevo, or Yasenevo, delivery works the same. Name the address during booking; the courier will arrive at the agreed time; the handover takes 15–20 minutes: car inspection, signing the contract, activating insurance.
What to consider when choosing a meeting point
- Parking in the center: Parking in areas inside the Garden Ring is paid — 380–800 ₽/hour from 8:00 to 21:00, and 200 ₽/hour at night; budget for this if you pick up the car at a hotel in the center.
- Parking at airports: short-term zones near terminals are more expensive than remote ones; the courier will suggest the best option upon confirmation.
- Delivery time: During rush hours (weekdays 7:00–11:00 and 16:00–20:00), a transfer from the center to Sheremetyevo takes longer — allow an extra 30–40 minutes.
- Towing: for unpaid parking, the car may be towed to an impound lot — this costs 8 500–12 450 ₽ plus storage, and the expenses are recharged to the renter.
We deliver cars across the capital, the Moscow region, and to all four airports around the clock—the meeting time is chosen to match the flight or the client's schedule and is fixed when confirming the booking in MAX or by phone.
Choosing a rental car for foreigners in Moscow
The Rent-Trip fleet for foreigners in the capital is 51 cars in eight classes: from compact sedans to nine-seat minivans. The choice comes down to three questions: how many people are travelling, what luggage, and on what roads you plan to drive.
Comfort and business class for the city
Sedans like the Geely Emgrand at 3 300 ₽ per day or Kia K5 at 4 500 ₽ are a reasonable option for trips around the center, where parking in the narrow lanes of the Patriarch Ponds or near Chistye Prudy is important. The Geely Emgrand (5 seats, automatic, front-wheel drive, 1.5 L, 122 hp) is the most affordable car in the fleet. Moskvich 6 at 3 500 ₽ and Škoda Octavia at 3 800 ₽ are liftbacks with a spacious trunk: if you are flying to Domodedovo with two suitcases, the liftback trunk solves the issue. Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata at 4 500 ₽ are for business meetings in Moscow City or on Kutuzovsky Prospekt.
Crossovers for the Moscow region and intercity routes
If you are planning the Golden Ring or Tula with Yasnaya Polyana, take a crossover: the road to Suzdal takes 3-4 hours, and a soft-roader with higher ground clearance than a sedan gives more confidence on regional highways. The Haval Jolion at 4 200 ₽ is the most affordable crossover in the fleet. The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max at 4 900 ₽ with all-wheel drive is for a trip to Kolomna via the M-5. Toyota RAV4 at 5 900 ₽ and Geely Monjaro at 6 500 ₽ — if you are driving to Saint Petersburg via the M-11 Neva motorway: 700 km behind the wheel is more comfortable in a car with good sound insulation and cruise control. All-wheel drive in the Moscow region in winter is not a luxury: snow and slush are common here from December to February.
SUVs and minivans for large groups
For groups of 6 to 9 people — Kia Carnival at 10 500 ₽ per day (8 seats, diesel, automatic) or Hyundai Staria at 9 500 ₽ (9 seats, diesel, all-wheel drive). Both cars are suitable for transfer from Sheremetyevo (SVO) with a large group and luggage. Toyota Land Cruiser 300 at 19 000 ₽ — for VIP trips or a route to Kazan along the M-12 Vostok motorway. Please note: the fleet also has a Lada Niva Travel with a manual transmission for 3 500 ₽ — if manual transmission is a must.
Rental period: a week is considered six days, a month as 21 days, so the longer the term, the lower the effective rate per day. Fuel: most cars are petrol, diesel is available on minivans and Land Cruiser 300. Drive: front-wheel drive is standard for the city, all-wheel drive on crossovers and SUVs. Age and driving experience: requirements increase with the car class, specific numbers are stated in the rental agreement.
Toll roads and parking — what to consider when renting a car for foreigners in Moscow
For a guest of the capital, paid infrastructure often comes as a surprise: some roads, parking in the center, and camera fines work differently than in other countries. Let us cover the main points so your trip around Moscow and the region does not end with unexpected charges. In our rental agreements, we always specify the rules for paying for roads, and the car handover terms are clarified when booking—but it is useful to know the basic principles in advance.
Toll sections within the city: MSD (Moscow High-Speed Diameter) and TsKAD charge 19 ₽ per section during peak hours—weekdays from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, outside peak hours and on weekends travel is free. The full TsKAD ring will cost 171 ₽, transit without exiting—950 ₽. Payment is automatic: by license plate or via a transponder, which gives a discount of up to 25%.
Country highways: the M-11 Neva motorway to Saint Petersburg is tolled along its entire length; the M-12 Vostok motorway to Kazan for a passenger car costs 5 909 ₽ for the whole route. The fine for non-payment of the toll comes to the car owner, i.e., the rental company — we pass it on to the renter, so we recommend checking your account in the road operator's personal account within a couple of weeks after the trip.
Parking in the center: in the Garden Ring zone, an hour costs 380–800 ₽ from 8:00 to 21:00, at night — 200 ₽. The fine for non-payment is 5 000 ₽, plus towing will cost 8 500–12 450 ₽ and storage at a special lot. Before a trip to the center, it is easier to find parking near the Third Ring Road or the MKAD ring road and take the metro — it is cheaper than risking towing.
Camera fines: they record speeding, lane violations, and driving in dedicated lanes—the notice goes to the car owner. With Rent-Trip rentals, we forward a copy to the renter, and payment is deducted from the card specified in the contract. You can check the payment deadline with a 50% discount (first 20 days) in the rental agreement or when booking.
Winter rental and suburban routes from Moscow
From December to February, Moscow and the region enforce a mandatory seasonal regulation: cars in our fleet are fitted with winter tires, and the roads are snowy and slushy—something drivers from warmer countries should be prepared for. At Rent-Trip we deliver a prepared car to any point in the capital and the Moscow region, including airports, so a foreigner won't have to find a tire service or figure out local rules on their own—the car arrives ready for sub-zero temperatures. However, trips outside the city in winter are a separate scenario that requires attention to toll roads and travel time.
Winter conditions: tyres, warming up, and camera fines
- Seasonal tires: under the technical regulation TR TS 018/2011, studded or non-studded winter tyres are mandatory from December to February — the entire Rent-Trip fleet switches to them in advance.
- Engine warm-up: In frosts down to -20 °C, start the car 5–7 minutes before your trip and clear the body of snow — uncleared snow from the roof obstructs other road users and is treated as a violation.
- Camera fines: decisions come to the owner of the car, i.e., the rental company, and we reissue them to the renter — the agreement specifies the procedure and payment terms.
- Parking in the center: from 8:00 to 21:00 an hour within the Garden Ring costs 380–800 ₽, night rate — 200 ₽/hour; unpaid parking may result in a fine of 5 000 ₽ and towing for 8 500–12 450 ₽ plus storage.
Where to go in a rental car
The landscape around the capital is plains and forest, no mountains or passes, so country trips are available in any car from the fleet. Saint Petersburg is 700 km on the toll M-11 Neva motorway, about 7 hours of travel; the road is paid via transponder or by license plate, tariffs depend on the vehicle class. The Golden Ring—Sergiyev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslavl, Suzdal, and Vladimir—is a route from 1 to 4 hours' drive from the MKAD ring road on paved highways. Kazan via the M-12 Vostok motorway will take about 8 hours, toll for passenger class is 5 909 ₽ for the entire route, and Tula with Yasnaya Polyana is 2.5 hours via the M-2 or M-4.
For winter trips, choose all-wheel-drive vehicles: Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max at 4 900 ₽/day or Toyota Land Cruiser 300 at 19 000 ₽/day hold snow slush on regional roads more confidently. On the M-11 and M-12 there are toll sections where a transponder gives a discount of up to 25% — check its availability when booking. If you're planning a long trip, take a car for a week: the rate is lower than daily, and we'll deliver the car to your hotel or airport at a convenient time — in winter this saves you from waiting for a taxi in the cold.
Terms of the agreement and communication with Rent-Trip when booking a rental for foreigners
Booking a car by a foreigner takes a few minutes: you contact us via MAX or by phone, state the dates, car class, and delivery point, and the manager confirms availability and sets the terms in the contract.
What data is needed for booking
- Driver's documents: international passport, migration card, and visa or residence permit — these are sufficient to sign the contract.
- Licences: National driving licence; for countries outside the Vienna Convention — notarized translation or international permit (IDP).
- Bank card: in the name of the primary driver, for the insurance hold; the exact amount is specified in the contract.
- Contact for communication: The MAX number or the phone number by which the manager will confirm the booking and agree on the delivery time.
What is specified in the contract
We include in the contract all conditions that affect the trip: the composition of CASCO insurance, the amount of the insurance deductible, the mileage limit, the cost of delivering the car, and the requirements for the driver's age and experience. These parameters depend on the car class—for comfort-class sedans they are one thing, for SUVs like the Tank 300 or Toyota Land Cruiser 300 they are another. Therefore, we fix specific figures individually when confirming the booking, rather than publishing them in a general price list. OSAGO, the compulsory third-party insurance required by law, applies to every car in the fleet automatically.
How we deliver a car
We bring the car wherever is convenient for the client: to Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, or Zhukovsky airport, to any of the ten railway stations — Leningradsky, Kazansky, Kursky — or to a hotel in the center, for example, at Patriarch's Ponds or near Moscow City. We have no physical office, so the meeting takes place at the arrival terminal or in the parking lot next to the building. At handover, we check documents, show the condition of the body according to the report, and explain how the paid sections of the MSD and TsKAD work — this takes about fifteen minutes. The timeframes for preparing the agreement and translating licences for guests from other countries are clarified upon booking — just write to MAX.
