From December to February, winter tyres are mandatory in the capital by law — this is a requirement of the technical regulation TR CU 018/2011, and rental companies switch the entire fleet without additional charges for the renter. The only question is who is responsible for changing the tyres and what exactly you get with the car.

What is important to know about winter tires in a rental

• Studs or "Velcro": The type of tyres depends on the batch and model; the specific option is clarified when booking — both categories are acceptable for the Moscow winter.
• Seasonal replacement: The terms of tire change and the timing of seasonal tire swaps are specified in the lease agreement.
• Summer season: From June to August, studded tires are prohibited — in summer, rental cars are fitted with appropriate tires.
• Tire condition: Requirements for tread and the procedure for checking tires are specified in the rental agreement.

What models are available in winter

For winter trips on asphalt — to Saint Petersburg via the M-11, to Tula, or along the Golden Ring — a front-wheel-drive crossover with winter tires is sufficient. All-wheel drive makes sense for the Moscow region and regional roads, where snow removal is not as prompt as on the MKAD and Third Ring Road. On wet snow or ice, the difference between drive type and tire type is felt more strongly than between car classes. If you're planning a long trip in freezing temperatures, choose a car with heated seats and mirrors — this is specified in the trim list when booking.

How to choose a car for winter rental in Moscow — all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive

In winter, the main question when choosing a car is not color or power, but the type of drive. All-wheel drive starts more confidently on snow and more easily exits ruts in yards where utility workers have not yet passed. But for most trips on cleared asphalt of the capital, front-wheel drive is sufficient - provided good winter tires. Let's sort out which drive suits whom and how much it costs in our fleet.

Front-wheel drive: for the city and cleared highways

A front-wheel-drive crossover covers 80–90% of winter rental scenarios: trips along the Garden Ring, Third Ring Road and MKAD, a trip to Sheremetyevo Airport via M-11 or Leningradskoye Shosse. On clear asphalt, you will rarely feel the difference from all-wheel drive. The price is lower, fuel consumption is less, and most cars in our fleet are such: Haval Jolion for 4 200 ₽ per day, Geely Coolray for 4 300 ₽, Moskvich 3 for 3 900 ₽. For a trip to the dacha along the cleared Novorizhskoye or Dmitrovskoye Shosse, front-wheel drive is sufficient. Difficulties will only start if you have to park in an uncleared courtyard or pull out of a snowdrift — there front-wheel drive slips.

All-wheel drive: for the Moscow region and long roads

All-wheel drive pays off when in winter you go out of town: to the Tver region, along the Golden Ring or towards Tula. On regional roads that are cleaned less often than in the capital, all-wheel drive with ground clearance from 190 mm noticeably holds the rut and snow slush more calmly. For a family with children, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for 7 seats are practical. Keep in mind: all-wheel drive does not replace winter tires, but complements them. On ice on the MKAD ring road it helps when starting, but it does not shorten the braking distance.

Comparison of cars for winter rental

If you plan only the city and airports — take front-wheel drive and save. For trips to the region and long routes, choose all-wheel drive. For a week, an all-wheel-drive Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max will cost from 29 400 ₽ — cheaper than three days at the daily rate. How much does it cost to rent a car in winter in Moscow

Winter rental prices in our fleet start from 3 500 ₽ per day for a Lada Niva Travel and reach 19 000 ₽ for a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 - the final rate depends on the car class, its drive, and the rental period. The daily rate includes mandatory OSAGO (compulsory third-party insurance) and seasonal winter tires, which are already installed on all 90 vehicles. The deposit, CASCO (comprehensive insurance) coverage, and mileage limit are specified in the rental agreement.

How much do different car classes cost in winter

Week and month: more profitable than daily

For long-term rental, the daily rate decreases: a week is calculated as six days — from 21 000 ₽, a month as 21 days — from 73 500 ₽. For winter trips of two to three weeks, for example to Saint Petersburg or Kazan via the M-12 Vostok toll motorway, a monthly tariff is significantly more economical than extending daily. Exact terms of long-term contracts and payment schedule should be clarified when booking via MAX or phone — the manager will select an option for your route.

• Sheremetyevo (SVO): north, about 30 km from the MKAD ring road, access via the M-11 or Leningradskoye Shosse; we deliver the car to Terminal B or C.

How the car handover works in winter

We deliver the car ready for the trip. At handover, you inspect the body together with us, we record chips and scratches in the report, and check the fuel level. Documents are signed on the spot, after which the keys and vehicle registration certificate are yours. Saint Petersburg in one day: M-11 Neva motorway

M-11 Neva is a toll road along its entire length; during peak hours they charge 19 ₽ per section, transit without exits is 950 ₽. To Saint Petersburg is about 700 km and roughly 7 hours of pure driving — with heavy traffic, allow 8–9. For such a route, a Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max at 4 900 ₽/day with all-wheel drive and ground clearance higher than city sedans will suit. On the M-11 there are cameras and rest areas with fuel stations every 50–70 km — in winter, check the fuel level in advance; there are queues on the road during peak dates.

The Golden Ring and nearby cities: from 2 to 4 hours

Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslavl, Suzdal, Vladimir — a classic route that looks especially atmospheric in winter. To Sergiev Posad — about 1 hour, to Yaroslavl — 3–4 hours along the Yaroslavl highway, most of the way is free. For the Golden Ring, it is convenient to take the Haval Jolion at 4 200 ₽/day: front-wheel drive is sufficient on cleared roads, and the 1.5-liter engine consumes about 7–8 liters per 100 km on the highway.

Tula, Yasnaya Polyana and Kolomna

Tula and Yasnaya Polyana — about 2.5 hours via the M-2 or M-4, the road is partially toll. Kolomna — about 2 hours via the M-5, a free section up to the city. For such trips, a Moskvich 3 at 3 900 ₽ per day is suitable — a budget option with winter tires and heated seats. On weekends, there are traffic jams on the M-4 and M-2 at the entrance to Tula — leave before 8 a.m. to return to the capital before dark.

Toll roads and transponder: how not to overpay

The presence of a transponder included with the car is confirmed at booking. Fines from cameras are sent to the car owner, i.e. Rent-Trip, and are re-invoiced to the renter. Terms of payment for toll sections are specified in the rental agreement. If you are planning Kazan, allow about 8 hours for the road; the M-12 Vostok motorway is cleared as a priority in winter, but in heavy snowfall speeds drop to 60–70 km/h.

Documents for renting a car in winter in Moscow

To rent a car in winter in the capital, a Russian citizen only needs a passport and a category B driving licence — that is the full list; we do not ask for any additional certificates. Foreign guests need a few more documents, but the process remains quick: the entire check takes a few minutes when delivering the car. Documents for citizens of Russia

• Passport: the main document; without it, the car will not be issued — copies and photos are not acceptable.
• Driving licence: category B, driving experience not important for economy-class cars, but for powerful SUVs the requirements are higher — exact terms are specified in the contract.
• Bank card: It is needed for the insurance deposit; the card must be issued in the name of the main driver, and the hold amount is specified in the contract.

Documents for foreign citizens

• International passport: with a valid visa or residence permit, plus a migration card — an entry stamp is mandatory.
• Driving licence: National licences from your own country are suitable if the country is a party to the Vienna Convention; for licences from China and other countries outside the Convention, a notarized translation or an international permit is required — this is a requirement of Article 25 of Federal Law No. 196.

In our experience, in winter cars are most often rented by guests from China and CIS countries — for the former, we always remind them about a notarized translation of their driving licence; without it, a traffic police officer may issue a fine of 5 000–15 000 ₽ for driving without a valid document. Fines, parking lots, and toll roads when renting a car in winter in Moscow

Winter Moscow adds three cost items to driving that are worth knowing before booking: camera fines, parking in the centre, and paid sections of the MSD and TsKAD. Let's look at how this works when renting a car, so that the trip does not end with an unexpected charge.

Who receives fines from cameras

Traffic camera fines go to the car owner — i.e., the rental company, not the driver. Rent-Trip re-invoices them to the renter, so an unpaid violation will still reach you, just with a slight delay.

• Speeding: A typical fine in Moscow is from 500 ₽ for a slight overspeed to 5 000 ₽ for a serious one.
• Incorrect parking: from 3 000 ₽ to 5 000 ₽ depending on zone and signs.
• Driving into a dedicated lane: 3 000 ₽, cameras catch this actively.
• Running a red light: 1 000 ₽ for the first violation.

Parking in the center of Moscow

Paid parking in the center — within the Garden Ring and part of the Third Ring Road — operates from 8:00 to 21:00, rate 380–800 ₽ per hour depending on the zone. Payment terms at night are specified in the rental agreement.

Fine for unpaid parking is 5 000 ₽, and if the car was towed, add 8 500–12 450 ₽ for towing plus storage at the impound lot. Zones with the maximum rate and payment rules are specified at booking.

Toll roads: MSD and TsKAD

The Moscow High-Speed Diameter and the TsKAD ring are toll roads, but only during peak hours. On weekdays from 7:00 to 11:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00, one section costs 19 ₽; outside peak and on weekends it is free. A transit trip without exits costs 950 ₽.

If you're heading out of town, note that the M-11 Neva motorway to Saint Petersburg and the M-12 Vostok motorway to Kazan are toll roads along their entire length. The full route on the M-12 for a passenger car costs 5 909 ₽. The discount for paying with a transponder is specified in the rental agreement.

How not to overpay

The procedure for paying for toll sections — by transponder or by car plate within the road operator's deadline — is specified in the rental agreement. It is clarified when booking, especially if you plan a long trip on the M-11 or M-12 — the navigator often suggests toll sections, and it is better to know in advance how they will be charged.
