Renting an all-wheel-drive car: how to choose and not overpay
All-wheel drive cars in Moscow — 40 cars in the Rent-Trip fleet: from Lada Niva Travel at 3 500 ₽ per day to Mercedes-Benz G-Class at 33 000 ₽. We deliver cars across Moscow, the region, and to four airports — Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky.
Rental of all-wheel-drive cars in Moscow for winter conditions
Snowfalls and black ice in the capital are the norm for December–February, so all-wheel drive on a rented car noticeably simplifies life. While rear-wheel-drive sedans spin their wheels when starting from a traffic light and in uncleaned courtyards, an all-wheel-drive car starts more confidently and holds the line on the MKAD ring road. By law (TR CU 018/2011), from December to February all vehicles must run on winter tyres — in our fleet, tyres are changed seasonally, so cold-weather preparation is already included in the service.
How all-wheel drive behaves on Moscow roads
All-wheel drive distributes torque between the axles, reducing the risk of wheel spin on snow slush and ice. On cleared highways and the Third Ring Road, the difference is not always noticeable, but in courtyards, parking lots near shopping centers and when leaving secondary streets it manifests itself immediately. For winter, this is not a luxury, but a practical reserve of confidence: short trips around the city and long trips on suburban highways are calmer when the car depends less on the condition of the asphalt.
It is worth remembering: all-wheel drive facilitates starting and stabilization, but does not cancel physics — the braking distance on ice is the same for all types of drive. Therefore, at Rent-Trip we recommend choosing a car with a margin in ground clearance and power, rather than relying only on 4WD.
What all-wheel drive cars are in the fleet
Our fleet includes 40 all-wheel-drive vehicles in 8 classes, from compact crossovers to premium SUVs. For winter, the most practical are crossovers with a ground clearance of at least 190 mm and an automatic transmission:
- Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max: petrol, automatic, 1.6 L and 150 hp — 4 900 ₽ per day.
- Haval F7: petrol, automatic, 2.0 L and 192 hp — 5 200 ₽ per day.
- Kia Sportage: petrol, automatic, 2.0 L and 150 hp — 5 200 ₽ per day.
- Geely Monjaro: petrol, automatic, 2.0 L and 238 hp — 6 500 ₽ per day.
- Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: diesel, automatic, 2.4 L and 181 hp — 8 000 ₽ per day.
The choice of tires and drive type are specified in each model's card. If you plan frequent trips out of town in winter, take a car with a diesel engine — highway fuel consumption is lower, and low-end torque is more stable.
Winter tires and seasonal preparation
Seasonal tire changes at Rent-Trip are part of vehicle preparation before delivery. In winter, all cars are fitted with tires marked M+S, and studded options are used on SUVs for trips to the Moscow region. In summer, from June to August, studded tires are prohibited — during this period, the fleet is switched to summer tires.
Before signing the agreement, ask the manager what tires are on the specific model. If the route includes only Moscow and the MKAD ring road, friction tires are sufficient; for regular trips to the region on cleared roads, studded tires give a slight advantage on ice. All details on seasonal preparation and tire condition are recorded in the acceptance report upon car delivery.
Which all-wheel-drive cars can be rented in Moscow by the day

The cost of renting all-wheel-drive cars in Moscow — from budget to premium
The price range for all-wheel-drive vehicles in our fleet is from 3 500 ₽ per day for a Lada Niva Travel to 33 000 ₽ per day for a Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The daily rate depends on the car class, while weekly and monthly rentals work out cheaper per day. Let's break down how the cost is formed and what it includes.
Budget segment: from 3 500 ₽ to 6 500 ₽ per day
This includes available SUVs and crossovers — cars for daily trips around the capital and outings to the Moscow region. Lada Niva Travel with a manual gearbox — 3 500 ₽ per day, UAZ Patriot — 4 500 ₽. Among crossovers with an automatic: Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max for 4 900 ₽, Tenet T7 for 5 000 ₽, Haval F7 and Kia Sportage at 5 200 ₽ each, Geely Atlas for 5 300 ₽, Haval Dargo for 5 500 ₽, Jaecoo J7 for 5 600 ₽. Diesel pickup Great Wall Poer — 6 500 ₽ per day.
Mid-range segment: from 6 500 ₽ to 13 000 ₽
Here appear more powerful crossovers and seven-seat SUVs for the family. Geely Monjaro and Exeed TXL—6 400–6 500 ₽. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport diesel—8 000 ₽, Haval H9 and Jetour T2—8 500 ₽ each. Nine-seat Hyundai Staria—9 500 ₽. Business sedans with all-wheel drive: Genesis G80 for 9 500 ₽, Audi A6 for 10 500 ₽. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250—13 000 ₽ per day.

Toyota Land Cruiser 300 with 3.3 L diesel — 19 000 ₽, Mercedes-Benz GLS — 20 000 ₽, Lexus LX 600 — 22 000 ₽. Electric Zeekr 001 and 009 — 18 000 ₽ each. Top position: Mercedes-Benz G-Class for 33 000 ₽ per day.
Week and month: how to calculate more profitably
- Weekly rental: from 21 000 ₽ — that's the daily rate multiplied by six days, the seventh day is a gift.
- Monthly rental: from 73 500 ₽ — the daily rate multiplied by 21 days, which is noticeably cheaper than paying daily.
- Insurance: OSAGO (compulsory third-party insurance) is included in the cost of every car by law; CASCO (comprehensive insurance) terms are specified in the contract.
- Deposit and mileage limit: The security deposit amount and daily mileage limit are specified in the contract.
Renting an all-wheel-drive car for a week or a month is more advantageous with a margin in class: the difference in the daily rate over a long period evens out, while comfort and off-road capability are higher. When booking, check the current price for the desired dates—during the winter months, the fleet of all-wheel-drive cars is rented out fastest.
How rental of an all-wheel-drive car in Moscow without a driver works
The self-drive format means the car remains at your disposal for the entire contract term, and we handle all delivery and paperwork issues. Our fleet has 40 all-wheel-drive models — from Lada Niva Travel to Mercedes-Benz G-Class — and each can be rented without a driver if you have an open category B licence.
Documents for rental: Russians and foreigners
For citizens of Russia, a passport and a driving licence of category B are sufficient. Foreign renters will need a passport, migration card, visa or residence permit, as well as a national driving licence. If the licence is issued in a country not party to the Vienna Convention (e.g., China), it is valid only with a notarized translation or an International Driving Permit—this is a requirement of Article 25 of Federal Law No. 196-FZ.
- OSAGO: Compulsory insurance covers liability to third parties and is included in the price.
- CASCO (comprehensive insurance): The terms of insuring the vehicle itself are specified in the contract — the coverage scope and deductible should be clarified when booking.
- Deposit: the main driver's bank card is used to block the deposit, the exact amount is specified in the agreement.
- Age and experience: requirements increase with the vehicle class, specific values are in the contract.
How the car handover works
We deliver cars across Moscow, to four airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky—and to railway stations. Upon meeting, we check documents, sign the contract, and record the car's condition in an inspection report. In winter, from December through February, cars are fitted with winter tires—this is a requirement of the technical regulation TR CU 018/2011, and the entire fleet switches to seasonal tires in advance.
Camera enforcement fines go to the car owner, i.e., the rental company, after which they are reissued to the renter. Toll sections—MSD, TsKAD, M-11, M-12—are paid by the renter via transponder or by plate number within the road operator's deadline. All these terms are set in the contract, so before signing it is worth reading the liability section—in October we had a case where a client did not account for the TsKAD transit toll of 950 ₽ and received a reissue after returning the car.
Where to go in a rented all-wheel-drive car from Moscow
All-wheel drive in rental is not only confidence on the capital's winter streets, but also the opportunity to get out of town without looking back at the weather forecast. At Rent-Trip, we often deliver cars to clients planning a trip for 2–3 days: in that time you can drive to Saint Petersburg, the Golden Ring, or Tula and return without burning through your vacation.
Asphalt routes: from the Moscow region to Kazan
- Saint Petersburg: ~700 km along the toll M-11 Neva motorway, about 7 hours on the way. For such a stretch, the BMW X5 or Toyota Land Cruiser 300 are comfortable—at high speeds, all-wheel drive stabilizes the car on wet and snowy surfaces.
- The Golden Ring: Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslavl, Suzdal, Vladimir — 1 to 4 hours of road from the capital. Convenient to stretch over 3–5 days, staying overnight in two or three cities.
- Kazan: ~8 hours along the M-12 Vostok motorway, the entire route for a car costs 5 909 ₽. In a Tank 300 or Haval H9, the trip no longer depends on the condition of the roadsides or weather surprises.
- Tula and Yasnaya Polyana: ~2.5 hours along the M-2 or M-4. A short weekend outing — the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max will do for 4 900 ₽ per day.
- Kolomna: ~2 hours via the M-5, an excellent option for a day trip in a Kia Sportage or Geely Atlas.
Toll roads and winter tyres
Toll sections of the MSD and TsKAD are paid for by the renter separately—via a transponder or by license plate within the road operator's deadline. The transponder gives a discount of up to 25%, and toll rates on the M-12 have increased by 8–10%—factor this into your budget. In winter, from December to February, tires on all fleet cars are seasonal: the law requires winter tires, and we change the tires on the cars in advance. Fines from cameras are sent to the owner, i.e., the rental company, and are reissued to the renter—there are few cameras on the M-11 and M-12, but they are present in the cities of the Golden Ring.
What to check before departure
Countryside routes are always on asphalt: the rental contract prohibits off-road driving. All-wheel drive here is not for mud, but for wet asphalt, snow drifts on the highway, and icy courtyards in small towns. If you plan a trip of 7 days or more, the weekly rate is more profitable than the daily rate: from 21 000 ₽ per week versus 3 500 ₽ per day for the most affordable model. Specific terms for road and fine payments are stated in the rental contract — check when booking via MAX or by phone.
Rental of an all-wheel-drive car for trips to Moscow airports and railway stations
It is convenient to get an all-wheel drive car right after a flight or train arrival — we deliver a car to any of the four Moscow airports and the main railway stations. This saves an hour or an hour and a half on the road to the city and back, especially if the route starts beyond the MKAD ring road.
Delivery to airports
We deliver the car to the arrival terminal — at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky. The distance from the MKAD varies: about 30 km to Sheremetyevo via the M-11 or Leningradskoye Shosse, about 28 km to Vnukovo via Kievskoye or Borovskoye Shosse, about 45 km to Domodedovo via Kashirskoye Shosse or the M-4, and about 40 km to Zhukovsky via Novoryazanskoye Shosse. The delivery time is agreed when booking, based on the actual flight arrival — if the flight is delayed, the car will wait for you later than originally planned.
Delivery to railway stations and the city center
For those arriving by train, we deliver all-wheel-drive cars to Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, Kazansky, Kursky, Kievsky, Belorussky, and Paveletsky stations. We also bring the car to any district of the capital—from Khamovniki and Patriki to Strogino and Chertanovo. The car handover takes about 15 minutes: we check the body condition, process the documents, and record the odometer readings on the spot.
What to consider when picking up the car
- Documents: for citizens of Russia — passport and driving licence of category B; for foreigners — passport with migration card and visa or residence permit.
- Insurance: OSAGO applies to all cars by law; CASCO terms are specified in the rental contract.
- Financial deposit: hold on the main driver's bank card, the exact amount is specified in the agreement.
- Camera fines: go to the car owner and are reissued to the renter — check your email after the trip.
Before handing over, we fill the car and check the tire pressure — in winter on all-wheel drive this is critical for a confident start on snowy surfaces. If you are flying on a night flight, inform us when booking — delivery to the airport at night is possible by prior arrangement.
Choosing an all-wheel-drive rental car for your task
Choosing an all-wheel-drive car comes down to three questions: how many people will go, what roads, and what budget for the trip. Our fleet has 40 such cars in eight classes, so there is an option for any task — from a city crossover to a business sedan.
Family trip: minivans and seven-seat crossovers
For a trip with children or two couples of adults, look at capacity: the fleet has cars for 6, 7, and 9 seats. The seven-seat Haval H9 at 8 500 ₽ per day or the diesel Mitsubishi Pajero Sport at 8 000 ₽ are working options for a countryside trip with six people. The nine-seat Hyundai Staria at 9 500 ₽ covers the scenario when three generations of a family travel. For a trip to the dacha with four people and luggage, a five-seat crossover is enough—for example, the Geely Atlas at 5 300 ₽, whose boot accommodates both a stroller and bags. All-wheel drive on such cars is insurance on a winter suburban road, where they clear worse than the MKAD ring road.
Business meeting: sedans and premium
If you need to meet a partner or conduct negotiations, take a flagship sedan. Mercedes-Benz S-Class at 25 000 ₽ per day or BMW 7 Series at 24 000 ₽ — the standard for business receptions. More interesting is the hybrid Voyah Passion at 9 800 ₽: 428 hp and a quiet cabin at a price noticeably lower than German flagships. For an airport meeting, we will deliver the car to Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), Vnukovo (VKO), or Zhukovsky (ZIA) — this is part of the service. When booking, specify whether a child seat or a sign with the guest's name is needed: such options are agreed individually.
Budget trip out of town
When the task is to get to the dacha via the M-5 or to Tula via the M-2 without overpaying, the Lada Niva Travel at 3 500 ₽ per day or UAZ Patriot at 4 500 ₽ suffices. Both are manual, both have all-wheel drive, and are repairable anywhere in the Moscow region. If you need an automatic, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max at 4 900 ₽ or Tenet T7 at 5 000 ₽. For a week, rental starts from 21 000 ₽, for a month—from 73 500 ₽, which is noticeably cheaper than daily payment. When booking, specify the season: from December to February, cars are on winter tires by law, no need to change them.
